When you connect headphones to your phone, and raise the volume beyond a certain limit, you get a warning telling you it’s dangerous to listen to loud music. Desktops don’t normally have this feature. If you need to limit the speaker volume on your desktop, you can use a third-party app to do so. As far as speakers are concerned, you will find plenty of apps that can limit or customize the audio output but there aren’t many available for the mic on your system. If you need to limit mic volume on Windows 10, give Limit Microphone Volume a try.
Limit mic volume
Limit Microphone Volume is a free, open-source app that you can download from Github. The app doesn’t need to be installed and when you run it, it goes straight to your system tray, setting the mic’s volume to 50.
To change the volume level, double-click the app’s icon in the system tray and you will get the app’s window which is basically just a volume slider. You can set the volume to whatever works for you.
Now that you know how you can limit the mic volume, you might wonder why you need to do this in the first place. Your mic can’t exactly damage your hearing but if you video or voice chat often, and the volume of your mic is frequently an issue this app might be able to help.
Some video/audio chat apps tend to change the volume of your mic. It might amplify it making you sound much louder than you mean to be. This app is a deterrent to that. If you don’t have problems with the mic on your desktop, you don’t need the app.

Windows 10 lets you set the volume for your speakers on a per-app basis but it doesn’t have anything similar for mics. In fact, there aren’t that many, if any, apps that let you set different levels of volume for the mic on Windows 10. It might be because the mic isn’t used as much as the speakers are but that doesn’t mean it isn’t used. Messaging apps, almost all of which let you make video and voice calls, are used a lot. Skype is one app that comes to mind and it has a lot of audio problems. There’s also the fact that now live game streaming is a thing and a tool that can help manage a mic on an OS level would actually be pretty useful.
