FPS i.e., frames per second is a measure of the quality of graphics in a game. The higher the FPS, the better the graphics and in-game transitions are. The FPS in a game depends on a few system requirements namely the GPU on the system, your monitor, and the game itself. You can check FPS to determine if you’re getting the best possible in-game graphics.
If a game doesn’t support a high FPS, there’s little you can do to force it. Likewise, if your graphics card is dated, you cannot expect it to meet the requirements of newer game titles. For very high FPS, you need a monitor that can support the output e.g., a 4K monitor. If you don’t have a monitor that can support high FPS like 120 or 240, there’s no point in owning a game or a GPU that can run it. You won’t get the output you want.
Assuming you have a game that supports a high frame rate,a GPU that can run it, and the right kind of monitor, you may wonder if you’re getting the promised FPS or not. Here’s how you can check FPS in a game.
If you’re playing a Steam game, finding the FPS is easy. Steam has a built-in tool that displays the current FPS, and updates it constantly. It lets you check FPS as you play the game.
To enable the Steam FPS overlay, open Steam and go to Steam>Settings. In the Settings pane, go to the In-Game tab, and enable the FPS overlay from ‘In-game FPS Counter’. Select which corner of the screen you want to display the current FPS.
‘); if (navigator.appVersion.indexOf(“Mac”)!=-1) document.write(”);
Launch a game on Steam and the FPS will be displayed in the corner you selected.
In-Game FPS Check
Some games provide a built-in tool for displaying game stats. These stats may, or may not, include the FPS. Check under the graphics settings of your game to see if it has an in-game tool for displaying the FPS.
For games that aren’t on Steam, and that do not have a built-in FPS tool, you can use Fraps. It’s a free tool that can check FPS and display it in a game as an overlay while you play. It works almost identical to how the Steam FPS tool works except it has other features that may or may not be useful for you.
Download, install, and run the app. The FPS tool is enabled by default so you need only run your game to get FPS stats.
Between these three solutions, you will be able to find a tool to check FPS in a game, regardless what GPU you own, and which game you play.
